Driver's License Point System in New York
Avoiding Points on Your Driver's License
The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has instituted a points system which assigns a specific number of points to traffic violations depending on their severity.
Once a driver accumulates 10 points, their license may be suspended or revoked. Driving privileges may also be revoked if a driver has three speeding convictions within an 18-month period. Points remain on a driving record from the date of the violation for 24 months. The number of points on a driving record has a direct impact on insurance rates.
